After warming up at the Driving Range, Sherwood Park, venue of the 2002 Tower Interprovincial Tournament, can be a daunting challenge off the Championship (Black) tees at 6007m for a par of 70. Off the other tees it is still testing - the Premier (Blue) at 5826m, par 71, the Club (White) at 5584m, par 71 and the Ladies' (Yellow) at 5124m, par 72 (Using the White tees, the Ladies also have a championship course of 5605m, par 71.) Hole 1 - Par 4 Championship 301m, Premier 301m, Club 295m, Ladies 290m Straightforward loosener with testing approach shot to elevated green with plenty of borrow. Hole 2 - Par 4 Championship 389m, Premier 384m, Club 345m, Ladies 315m Long, gentle dogleg and #1 Stroke hole. Play away from the fence with tee shot. Longer handicappers are best advised to lay up with approach to give the best possible chance of scoring a two pointer. Hole 3 - Par 3 Championship 137m, Premier 133m, Club 128m, Ladies 118m Slightly uphill to a shallow green guarded by large bunkers at front left & rear right - accuracy and distance control is imperative. Hole 4 - Par 5 (Par 4 off championship tee) Championship 420m (par 4), Premier 441m, Club 433m, Ladies 415m Dogleg to the right around tree-covered hillock, then a narrowing right to left approach to a small bunkered green - needs a good tee shot; tough off the Championship tee as a par 4, as a fairway bunker snaffles up a tee ball hit too far left. Hole 5 - Par 4 Championship 406m, Premier 379m, Club 367m, Ladies 309m Needs an accurate tee shot through a tree-lined gap, then straight "up and over" towards a large sloping (and tricky) green. Hole 6 - Par 3 Championship 177m, Premier 168m, Club 161m, Ladies 148m Tough hole in a crosswind from an elevated tee across open space to a well bunkered green. Hole 7 - Par 5 Championship 468m, Premier 468m, Club 460m, Ladies 388m Another dogleg par 5 that needs a good teeshot (avoid the rightside) to make the rest straightforward going. Hole 8 - Par 4 Championship 390m, Premier 357m, Club 340m, Ladies 318m A picturesque dogleg around a big tree to a green surrounded by native trees and fronted by two tricky wee pot bunkers. Hole 9 - Par 4 Championship 400m, Premier 365m, Club 355m, Ladies 305m Another to test accuracy off the tee, but then an open approach to large green. Mounding penalises wayward approach shots. Hole 10 - Par 4 Championship 327m, Premier 327m, Club 321m, Ladies 314m Yet another dogleg, but keep the teeshot straight and it's a good birdie chance. Long hitters can go for it over the native trees and greenkeepers shed! Hole 11 - Par 4 Championship 356m, Premier 356m, Club 356m, Ladies 325m Accuracy needed for approach shot through gap to long, sloping green. Hole 12 - Par 5 Championship 463m, Premier 458m, Club 428m, Ladies 388m Looks longer than it is, as wide fairway narrows down to tree-lined approach to an enclosed green with two well placed bunkers. Hole 13 - Par 4 (Par 5 for Ladies) Championship 408m, Premier 392m, Club 379m, Ladies 385m (par 5) Probably the toughest par 4, with the angled approach to an elevated green guarded by a large tree on one side and a couple of ponds on the other. Hole 14 - Par 3 Championship 186m, Premier 180m, Club 154m, Ladies 131m Delightful signature hole over a couple of ponds - but not as easy as it looks. Rated one of New Zealands best holes. Hole 15 - Par 4 Championship 276m, Premier 276m, Club 261m, Ladies 233m Testing teeshot then uphill approach to green - easiest hole on men's card. Tempting for longhitters, a trap for wayward hitters. Hole 16 - Par 4 Championship 369m, Premier 337m, Club 326m, Ladies 318m A drive to the left centre rewards the player with the best approach to the elevated green. Approaching from the centre and right side provides many obstacles including a well positioned Totara tree. Hole 17 - Par 3 Championship 162m, Premier 157m, Club 139m, Ladies 130m Deceptively tricky through a narrow, tree-lined gap to a long, two-tier green with a central hogs back. Hole 18 - Par 4 Championship 372m, Premier 347m, Club 336m, Ladies 294m Good drive needed on dog-leg left, then easy approach to large and long (40m) elevated green - but beware large bunker front left and a rear pin placement. | |
